REQUIREMENT:
The customer needed to reduce both cost and weight on a medium volume component used in an instrumentation layout in a modern aircraft.
WHY MICRO METALSMITHS?

The weight was reduced by 70% by changing from
a brass sheet fabrication to an aluminium alloy investment casting with no increase in section.

The cost was reduced by 60% through the elimination of all the brazing operations associated with the
built-up brass sheet component.
It is notable that many parts can be cast in one piece which seem impossible to mould in wax. Very often, such problems can be solved by the use of wax assembly which is a cheap and simple operation.
It is also worth noting that the MM casting process allows the specification of thinner sections than comparable techniques (down to 0.5mm).
These thin wall sections, combined with the ability to produce complex surface geometry, allow small parts to exceed rigidity standards obtainable with alternatives made up from flat material. |
