| REQUIREMENT: To produce components of complex geometry to tight tolerances and meet price constraints, all within a JIT (Just In Time) framework. Hewlett Packard wanted to source fully-finished components for the assembly line with a minimum of work-in-progress. WHY MICRO METALSMITHS? When Hewlett Packard were looking at manufacturing processes for their component they considered two methods, each involving two parts. One method called for a casting to be attached to a separate triangular plate, the other was to have both parts machined from solid and then joined. Neither method met their cost targets or their tolerance requirements. Collaboration with Micro Metalsmiths' engineers resolved their difficulties. They managed to re-design the suggested fabrication as a one piece complex part which could be accurately repeated by investment casting. Costs were reduced to below the original targets, and close tolerances were maintained in the critical areas. Probe equipped CNC machine tools are used to meet exacting tolerances in specified locations. Hewlett Packard realized in later discussions that Micro Metalsmiths could take them a stage further in meeting their goal through their ability to chromate parts for protection against corrosion, and to fit bearing bushes before final inspection. Micro Metalsmiths proposed an inspection programme which gave our customer his component JIT. |
